Escapement - Book Review

Escapament is the second book of The Neumarian Chronicles. As I had already read the first one, Weighted, I could follow the ideas of the author. I really liked reading Weighted, so I was excited to know how it would be the next step of Raeth’s journey.

In Weighted, the main character is Raeth; in Escapement who tells the story is Princess Semara. I did not expect it at all, but it was clever for sure. I reckon my interesting in reading Escapement increased a lot. Continuing the story by a different of point of view was awesome. Semara shows the other side of the coin.

There are some aspects of the book that I can’t let them pass by. One of them it is the way Ciara Knight (author) uses their characters to treat so delicate matters as family, prejudice, love (especially teenage love), fear, war, power, slave, secret and friendship is fantastic.
The plot and the characters play with readers while the narrative waves in ups and downs. Let me explain! In some moments you can trust in Bendar (for example), but few chapters later you question if he is really who he says to be. Or why Raeth keeps secrets from people who love.

Well… Be prepared to make lots of questions to yourself. But don’t worry, the author will connect the dots of this puzzle and you will be surprised.

Weighted - Book Review

Before you get involved with The Neumarian Chronicles – Weighted, I selected five precious words that you must have kept in mind during the reading process: Amnesia, Power, Prophecy, Annihilate and Doubts. I call A.P.P.A.D. to be easier. Don’t think I am telling the end of the book when I say A.P.P.A.D. because I am not. I am just pointing how the author, Ciara Knights, works with words, feelings and actions.

An intriguing plot is the key of WEIGHTED. In 41 pages you are sure that Raeth, main character, will lead you to a complete odd universe, full of mysteries, wars, pains, fears and… Love. Yeah, LOVE! The most impressive feeling is everywhere even in The Great War.

I do not like to put labels, but this story is not only YA, it is an intense well-written science fiction as well. It is not exactly an horror story, but it is not a bedtime reading either. This book is a page-turner story with generous sprinkling of chilling.

As soon as I started reading I got into the plot, I could not put down. The scene descriptions are brilliant, leading you from our real world to a different one in a glimpse.

Raeth is a twelve-year-old neumarian child who is captured by the Queen. There is something inside her that the enemy wants to know. Although she does not recognize this gift under her skin she needs to protect it. Imagine a little girl wounded, tortured in an unfamiliar place. However, she is not alone maybe the Princess Semara is on your side. Would she trust in the enemy?

I almost bet that Ciara Knight wrote this short story as a gift to guide us to the following books. If it is true, she deserves more than applauses. Well done!!! I cannot wait to read them all.

The One You Love – Book Review

Emma Holden’s life was going to be perfect, she was ready to marry Dan, and her happiness was close when something weird came about. Her love, Dan, did not appear in his stag party.

Lots of secrets are going to be revealed all over the next pages, more and more questions will make a mess in your head. Do not panic, the best part is still coming!
I am not afraid of saying this book is a real puzzle.

There are two or three set pieces that deserve more attention from readers, they seem not be part of the story, it is almost impossible to recognize who are talking to whom. Otherwise, it is not a negative side, I consider it one of the best techniques used by the author Paul Pilkington.

The One You Love has caught me since the first page. The plot is written in a way that you will not blink, truly. Do not feel awkward if suddenly you start talking, yelling, crying, running with Emma, Stuart, Will, Stephen, Peter and others fascinating characters, it is totally normal.

Honestly, I have found out who was the villain quite in the end of the book. However, sometimes things happened in the plot that I asked to myself whether I was right about who was the guilt indeed.

Sincerely, I am not a fan of trilogy. As soon as I finished to read The One You Love, I changed my mind as fast as I could. Let me explain, The One You love is the first of three books that has Emma Holden as the main character. The others are: The One You Fear and The One You Trust.

Certainly I will read them all!

Tips:

I have known that The One You Love is now available in paperback!
There is a caption competition on the author’s Facebook page and Twitter that you can win one of the 15 copies of the book in paperback. Don’t miss the chance! Check it out!

ABOUT TIME (film) and… Everything is ABOUT TIME!

In the year that Tim completes 21 years old, his father tells him all men of the family can travel in time. Then, he realizes how this secret family can be used to solve some problems, now he can fix whatever he did wrong in the past, especially about women. However, not everything is easy in life, even if you can travel in time.

The film is emotional, sensible, romantic, and comic, I could mention 10,000 adjectives to describe it.

The excitement to watch this film was huge for many reasons. Two of them were: Richard Curtis and Bill Nighy.

I have been a huge fan of Richard Curtis even when I did not know who he really was. Let me explain, I have been completely addicted to Mr Bean episodes since 1990. Only in 2003, when I saw Love Actually I realized that Richard Curtis was one of the writers of my favourite TV programme as well as Rowan Atkinson.

Good writer, good director, great cast: a fantastic film. Just have one exception, maybe it is a little bit longer than it should be. However, it is a film that involves you in a love atmosphere, you do not feel like a silly person watching a fool romantic film.

It is sincere, simple and real even when theme is travelling time.

THE OCEAN AT THE END OF THE LANE (book) and… The kid's life!

A middle-age man returns to his hometown (Sussex) for a funeral. Driving on the way where the funeral was happening, he changes route and pulls over in front of a place that many years ago there was his former house that he spent his childhood. For some reason, something takes his attention on the end of road: the Hempstock’s farm. From now on, he is going to bring back some old memories that include his friend Lettie Hempstock.

Adventure, fantasy, mystery, drama are some of the ingredients of this amazing story so well written by Neil Gaiman.

Before reading the book, I was afraid because I was not in the mood of deep inside human being stories, but after read reviews and comments, I took a risk. I do not regret at all!

Gaiman built a sincere main character, so close to reality, a regular man whose past is part of him even he does not know or remember. The readers and characters will suffer, imagine, and feel together all the moments.

One special point transforms a simple story in a masterpiece: the soul. The boy/man soul is revealed during the process of memory, how our mind, especially a kid’s mind, react to life and its happenings (bad and good), how it works to be safe of problems of life. Most likely fantasy is one of the ways that children use to run away from adult’s world as the writer says.

Honestly, I cried sometimes while I was reading it, but it is not because it is sad, it is because it is magic and real at the same time. There is a fact that I have to put in words, it really happened, I am not lying I swear. One night, I woke up at 4 a.m. to prepare porridge. Porridge? Yes. In the book, porridge is mentioned many times and I could not resist, old Mrs Hempstock influenced me.

Every word of the story is worth to be read!
