A
middle-age man returns to his hometown (Sussex) for a funeral. Driving on the
way where the funeral was happening, he changes route and pulls over in front
of a place that many years ago there was his former house that he spent his
childhood. For some reason, something takes his attention on the end of road:
the Hempstock’s farm. From now on, he is going to bring back some old memories
that include his friend Lettie Hempstock.
Adventure,
fantasy, mystery, drama are some of the ingredients of this amazing story so well
written by Neil Gaiman.
Before
reading the book, I was afraid because I was not in the mood of deep inside
human being stories, but after read reviews and comments, I took a risk. I do
not regret at all!
Gaiman
built a sincere main character, so close to reality, a regular man whose past is
part of him even he does not know or remember. The readers and characters will
suffer, imagine, and feel together all the moments.
One
special point transforms a simple story in a masterpiece: the soul. The boy/man
soul is revealed during the process of memory, how our mind, especially a kid’s
mind, react to life and its happenings (bad and good), how it works to be safe
of problems of life. Most likely fantasy is one of the ways that children use
to run away from adult’s world as the writer says.
Honestly,
I cried sometimes while I was reading it, but it is not because it is sad, it
is because it is magic and real at the same time. There is a fact that I have
to put in words, it really happened, I am not lying I swear. One night, I woke
up at 4 a.m. to prepare porridge. Porridge? Yes. In the book, porridge is
mentioned many times and I could not resist, old Mrs Hempstock influenced me.
Every
word of the story is worth to be read!
