A Knight's Tale (2001) is a film directed by the
eccentric Brian Helgeland who signed the screenplay as well. With an ambitious and
simple plot about a knight who tries to win a game, or better, a championship,
the director transforms an ancient tale into a current story.
The whole
long-run is passed in "Middle Age", focused on the 100 YEARS WAR,
14th Century. Real characters like Black Prince and the writer Geoffrey Chaucer
are on the screen. However, they are not merely put on the scenes, theses
characters are explored in a good way.
William
Thatcher (the main character) is a countryman, a peasant whose father gets him
to be a squire. After the death of his boss, he becomes a knight. Legally, a
squire could not be a knight, but he dresses his boss' clothes and goes to the
championship without anyone knowing who he is under the clothes, except his
team of helpers.
From my
perspective, Helgeland's view about championship in "Middle Age"
needs to be considered very creative. He compares so beautifully both eras,
“Middle Age” and nowadays.
Talking about
the crew… Every actor and actress is selected carefully. Each of them has the
perfect character and their performances are impressive. One of the actors,
Paul Bettany, in particular, has an audacious performance. Another one, the
main actor, Heath Ledge (1979-2008), is wonderful, he shows determination, dedication,
courage and funny atmosphere at the same time.
Everyone needs
to see this film. You will feel good and satisfied. There are some points that
it is not so perfect, but surely, they do not affect the film.
Well, I invite
you to see A knight’s tale. It is a
kind of movie that you will not forget easily, it is forever. Don't miss it!!!
